ACH flexibility comes with a paperwork rule: every debit needs the customer’s authorization. For recurring payments that means a clear, saved authorization that states the amount or how it is calculated, the timing, and how to cancel. For online debits, Nacha has required account validation the first time an account number is used since 2021, so build that check into your checkout or enrollment flow from day one.

Nacha’s new fraud-monitoring rules, phased in during 2026, also require originators to have risk-based processes to spot fraudulent payments, so clean authorizations, account validation, and fast handling of disputes are now baseline requirements (Nacha).
